A Dog Called Rod is based on an on-going ‘discussion’ between me and my daughter as to whether or not we should own a pet dog. In the story, dad (me) comes up with a series of logical, sensible reasons as to why they shouldn’t have a dog. Meanwhile Elsa (based on my daughter) puts forward a lively and imaginative case as to
why having a pet dog would be just wonderful. Both sides of the argument are represented on opposite pages throughout the book.

It was my editor at the time, who suggested I write a story about a dog. She’d seen an ink drawing of a dog in my portfolio that she really liked and thought it would be a good starting point for my second book. She wasn’t expecting me to write a story about an imaginary dog, but luckily she fell for Rod’s charms too!
